2003 Honda Accord Radio Repair – Part 1

2003 Honda Accord Radio Repair – Part 1

In this video, I demonstrate the steps required to repair a common problem with the factory radio in a 2003 Honda Accord. The symptoms of this problem include a loss of the radio backlight, as well as the backlights for the HVAC controls, such that neither are visible at night.

I have to credit YouTube users “mitch cox” and “HiTechElectronic” for providing the information I used to make this repair. Please also check out their videos, as I found them extremely helpful. My motivation for creating my own how-to video for this repair is to simply provide all of the information in one tutorial, including the removal, repair, and re-installation of the factory radio. In my initial searches for a solution to this problem, I did not find any videos that contained all of the information in one clip. I hope that this video will be helpful to some of you who have experienced this issue with the 2003 Accord.

I am not a professional mechanic, and my videos are intended to be used for informational purposes only, so please use this information at your own risk. I take no responsibility for the success you may have at attempting this repair on your own, and I urge you to be smart and do things safely if you do take on this repair.

Thank you for watching!

Thank you!!!!! Great tutorial Matt….It worked perfectly although I soldered a bridge using a jumper wire. Somehow I have two extra screws left and for the life of me can't figure our where they came from. Also, while having the radio out, I took the opportunity to install a bluetooth receiver into the AUX slot of the radio to "replace" my broken CD player. Streaming playlists is the way to go! You can get them from between $25 and up on ebay. Just due a search for accord bluetooth receiver.

Thanks for posting such a detailed series of videos. BUT BEWARE!!!! Just to save other people the time I wasted on this — this video shows repair of the OEM radio which has the 6-CD changer. It wasn't clear from the video. For those of us with the single CD player, the radio is completely different once it's taken out of the housing. If you're in this boat, you're better off searching for a replacement radio on eBay.

This video, and the second one, were perfect. I followed Matt's instructions and it worked like a charm. The only thing I really did differently was solder in a little jumper wire instead of using the conductive ink pen, which was a little tricky because it is a very tight space, but in the end, worked great!

My 2003 radio turns off and on by itself, then quit with occasionally off/on. Anybody have a solution for this one or is it just that Honda had shitty radios.

Thank you, Matt! I just did this fix on my 2003 Honda Accord EX V6 with 6-CD changer, no-Nav. Panasonic radio model number 39175-SDA-A110. Instead of using the pen, I removed the part at R797 and traced a solder bead between the contacts.

Great set of instructions. Radio worked for 4 months after using liquid wire to jumper the fuse. Last night the radio display started to flicker, heavy electric burning odor and then the display went out. Any ideas on what's blowing the fuse on the mother board? Is the problem isolated to the mother board and will replacing the radio fix it?

Hey Matt, thanks so much for posting this great video. Your instructions were so detailed and clear. Saved me a bunch! All worked out perfectly.
    3 tips for others:
    1. The ribbon cable was very easy to remove in my Honda. I think the trick is not to try to remove the whole black connector. The Ribbon just slid out FROM the connector, which stays attached to the board. You've just got to be careful putting it back in the right way around.
    2. I soldered a fine "jumper" cable over the fuse. Needed to sharpen the tip of my old Weller to reach into the tiny gap at the back.
    3. Also, to remove the storage compartment, I pulled the gearstick into "1", after putting a brick under a tyre so the car didn't roll away. Ha ha!
Be brave everyone. You can do it!

Thank you very much! It works well! But in my radio, it seemed like there was not much space like yours to make a join and put a wire. So fortunately, I was able to take out the resistance and just put enough tin to make the contact. It really seems they made it easy to break and hard to work there, just to make us pay to change the radio or something like that… Whatever, your video was very useful. Thank you again! 😉

Does anyone have a problem with the CD player not accepting CDs? Theyre all empty, and itll say to load it but when i put in a CD it will just eject and load the CD several times before it ejects it. No CDs are in the player. Ive reset the radio as well. Its for a 2006 honda accord.

Thank you Matt !!!! For 5 years I continue to ask Honda why my light is out on my radio panel. I always get the same answer. It's " I don't know take it to a radio shop because they don't fix radio's. That's a very sorry answer from Honda !!! I have dealt with it for years and not gotten it fixed guess i'm saying I"ve gotten use to it. In saying I lost my husband to cancer several years ago so I try to d0 everything on my own with no help. I'm giving my car to my granddaughter as she will be 16 in Dec. I'm going to try and tackle fixing this myself. I'm I turn OFF MY CELL PHONE and pay attention to you video I'm praying I can make it happen!!! I did make a list of your tools you used. Cross your fingers for me that I can make it happen! THANK YOU MUCH ……..

Thank you for this awesome tutorial, but before I get started i just wanted to ask you something. My issue is that the control lights for the radio/HVAC dont work, however the backlight for the radio display works fine. Do you think it could still be fixed with the fuse or would this seem to imply that the bulbs need replaced?

If by any slim chance you're still connected to these videos, I'm looking for some help.  I followed and finished and repaired the fuse with the circuit write and lights all work.  However, the lights will NOT go off with the power off and key out, etc.  The lights are always on and get quite hot.  I can pull the radio fuse to turn lights off, which also turns off radio as well.Thoughts?  Fixes?  I have a tentative plan to somehow "thin" or lessen any excessive amounts of my sloppy circuit writer pen fix.

2004 Accord V6. Great video! Very helpful. Appreciate the detailed instructions. I opted to buy a new/refurbished board ($50) from an OEM vendor online instead but with your directions it took me a little over an hour from start to finish to replace it. My cable on the circuit board was easy to remove. I placed my fingers as close as possible to the connection point and gently moved the cable side to side slightly and it came right out. Did the same when I reconnected it to the new board
Great job man! You saved me hours of frustration. You ROCK dude, thx!
