Better Options for Cheap Sound Absorption

Sound absorption materials, like cheap sound proof foam, are used to make a room sound better and to keep sound from escaping. When sound is generated in a room, sound waves move from the source—the instrument or the vocalist—and travel away. Sound travels fast, and the sound waves reach the edge of the room very quickly. If a wave finds a hard, non-absorptive surface there, the wave will bounce back into the room.

This uncontrolled bouncing of sound waves creates echo, reverberation, flutter, and other acoustic effects that interfere with clean sound. If the wave finds a thin wall or an air gap, it may not bounce at all, but rather travel out of the room unchecked.
