FIX Plugged in, Not Charging

How to repair the Dell power supply problem , where the computer no longer charges the battery or recogises the power supply ….
Main problem is the silicon by the adaptor right at the back of the computer hardens and cracks thus braking the Red Data cable in the center .. hence the computer no longer recognises the power supply …

I've only owned one Dell and it will be the last. I'm currently downloading drivers on a fresh install. They have a program to scan my computer and tell me what I need. They also want me to pay for the service. I'm just downloading what I think I need. Dell is the worst

It is 2019 and it the Future is calling you John Daniel to hail you the Hero of all Dell Waffle Irons out there. Dell really blundered, big time, with their poor Chinese engineering and quality control. Not the Dell computers that were once made in Texas. The fact that Dell had no clue to the problem clearly demonstrates a complete lack of care on their part. A real company would have did a thorough engineering study on the problem. A problem that has affected all of their 3 wire "If it ain't a Dell, I ain't gonna charge your battery" power bricks. My lengthy problem has been resolved, thanks to your down in the weeds electrical re-engineering. Cheers, Mate! I owe ya a pint.

Wow, so many videos on this and nothing worked.
I straightened the end of my cord as it comes into the Computer Charging Jack.
    Instantly, it starts charging.
Your correct, that wire is barely making a connection.

Never ever ever ever buy Dell. This design demonstrates their total arrogance and contempt for their users. Its not enough to suggest that users purchase Official Dell AC Adaptors. No, they felt they had the need to enforce that policy and punish the users by breaking the
computer. There should have been a class action lawsuit against Dell for all the lost computer availabilty and the repurchase of more and more AC adaptors.

My laptop got knocked over and landed on the plugged in charger. No damage to the laptop, but the plug tip got wrecked inside. I purchased a universal charger from Fry's Electronics and it worked for a while. Since the universal charger was 65 watts and my Dell Inspiron 15 requires 45, it eventually was locked out and would no longer charger since it wasn't OEM. All it said was 0% plugged in not charging, which actually led me to your video. Funny that a problem with something else led me to a solution. After watching your video, I finally sat down and slit the plug open, removed the sleeve and silicone, and found it was a broken connection. I tinkered with it until I got it to charge again and then I super glued it in place. Then I super glued the hell out of it. Solder wasn't an option because it is a ring shaped inner connection too close to the outer ring connection and inner pin. I wrapped the sleeve back around the mess and then filled the whole tip with super glue, and finally cinched down the sleeve with four micro zip ties. Nearly 8 years later and this video is still a relevant solution. It looks sloppy, but saving $45, I can't complain.

8 Years after you posted this and it helped me out. Used to fix the power cable on a Inspiron 15 7000 Series laptop. Easy as could be quick re-solder and back in business. Good quick fix until the new one I ordered came in.

Thanks so much, Mr. Daniel! I was getting intermittent 'not charging' incidents, but the biggest issue I had was that from time to time my machine was getting extremely laggy. After watching this, I moved the wire into different positions until BANG it was charging and the laggy behaviour stopped! I've tried so many things to stop it lagging, and now I finally have a solution. Just need to dig the soldering iron out from my dad's attic and repair the plug. So happy, thank you!

Dear Mr John. Baaie Dankie From your accent you sound South African. Fixed my son's Dell charger using your method. Really sneaky of Dell to have the third control cable that prevents use of generic chargers with same voltage and power ratings that don't have the third lead to centre pin.

Broke open my m14x R2 charger, and broke away heaps of plastic as the wires are cast into it and got so frustrated that I cut the tip off to just resolder down, cut it down a good half a foot and went to strip the wires, as I was stripping the green wire it fell out, green wire was completely snapped like 2 feet into my cord, cut it back and resoldered it, working fine since as of today!! Just got a new battery and all as it needed it and this video got it all working 110%! Only bought the alienware for like $400 knowing it had a dead battery

usually when i see Dell's with this "Plugged in, Not Charging" problem, my first thought is to check if the laptop will charge on any other 19.5v Dell charger.
if it insists not charging, i'd go to the bios and check if the computer can actually detect that the charger is connected and its Wattage,
if it says it cannot detect it or that the AC adapter is "unknown" then i can tell for certain that the problem is with the DC jack in the laptop.
another good way to tell is if the DC jack is wiggly and moving too freely, in that case there could be two possibilities, either the cord doesn't fully connect all the way in because the DC Jack probably got too deep inside the laptop.
or maybe the cords connected to the DC Jack inside from the motherboard (common in Inspiron models and Latitude models) are probably partially disconnected.
either way, as long as the DC Jack in your laptop is the type that is connected to the motherboard with a connector rather than be soldered into the motherboard, than its a pretty cheap and easy fix.
if its the other option, don't bother fixing it… just face your decision of buying a Dell and never buy a Dell ever again.
the best fix is most probably just trashing the damn thing (Dell Laptop) and getting an Asus or a Lenovo Laptop, both companies make the best laptops in the market and work much more than 2 months tops after warranty is over (fucking Dell, kings of making stuff break EXACTLY when your warranty is over)

Being Lazy, and having tried most of the other suggestions I went into Device Manager, I selected Batteries -> Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, right click and disable, answer warning, select the object I just disabled, right click, enable.  It started charging immediately.
