How to fix a switching power supply / how to repair ATX in a PC desktop computer

The following video gives some advices about how to fix some of the main problems in a desktop computer power supply.
I didn’t mention about how to fix or to service the fan, because I recommend you to watch the video “how to fix a noisy fan:

I also recomment you to download some atx power supplys schematics and to analyze them as a practice for ATX switching power supply technical service.

Do yourself a favor and buy a good power supply with a 11 year warranty. Get a supply with more power than the best video card you will ever use. A good supply should l last longer than three generations of CPUs and motherboards.

Can you do a modern update to this video? The internals of the unit you're working on in this video are vastly different from what is found in high performance ATX PSUs today. The one I'm trying to fix is much more densely packed with components and it has multiple PCBs and NO FUSE. I think it's tripping a failsafe, because it responds for a split second when I turn it on, only to shut itself down immediately.

that day i just discovered that a 3.3V sense must be connected to the 3.3v o/p line, i had removed al the wires as i wanted just the 12V , learned the hard way after 2 days , smps was turning on for just 0.5 sec and switching off, also i have a cooler master 500w with active pfc ,no o/p, even the 5vsb not present , checked everything now will remove those opto & try once again.

I noticed today a burn smell coming from my pc, turned it off and then tried to reboot. No display but the fans and lights still work. I noticed the psu red voltage switch in the back looked a lil burnt. What should i do?

@Bob. Kalpon  My situation is that i have a good very old PSU the one permanently attached inside the PSU (non removable) abd has 3.3v, 5v and 12volts !! Is not an ATX modern which you can jump with an ordinary clip
    to turn them ON !

Mine needs a load like a HDD or Floppy or CD-ROM connected to work ( any load like a 12v bulb )…. So …can you tell me if there is a way to bypass that LOAD System and make it Turn ON without any LOAD ???
Why most old switching PSUs need a LOAD to turn them ON ???
Thanks in advanced for your help !!

Hello Bob, veru nice video ! i have an Xbox PSU which is almost the same as an ATX where the Primary side works good, but it has no output. I replaced a shorted rectifier in the secondary section and also the capacitors, but still no output. Any clue on how to continue the troubleshooting as it has lots of SMD components on the reverse side of the PCB. Thanks.

The heat sinks gives you an idea how hot the power supply unit can get so it's important that it's clean inside. The fan should be running as it should. If you can install another fan to let air inside, it will help a lot the other standard fan drawing out hot air. The secret of PSU long life is regulating temperature.

Very nice video, very informative. Can you tell me what might be happening with the videos where people heat the intake on the PSU that won't start and run a computer? Then after a few minutes the computer will start. I assume this must have something to do with heat causing some expansion in the capacitors in the start area of the PSU, thus enabling them to charge up for the starting of the computer. I have two power supplies that I have swapped in and out, of the same computer for a couple of years. Now I see numerous capacitors that are bulging and must be the culprit. I find it interesting that the power supply that was giving trouble has been useful again after getting a long rest after it was removed and stored. These HIPRO PSU's that are used by HP seem to be pretty well built units, and it would be nice to be able to simply replace the bulging capacitors and return them to service. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

There is a bad transformer in my power supply. What is the correct procedure for desoldering the transformer I am unable to remove all the solder from the transformer pins with a sucker or a wick. Got any tricks?

Hi. My HP power supply's green light used to light On, now there's not light. It was just plugged in the mains (shut down) and when I woke up there's no more light. What subcomponent should I check first?
