I notice lots of stand alone phones, lights, and signal boards powered by solar panels on major highways, although I'm sure some have small batteries, I'd like to know if it is possible to hook a panel directly to an appliance (no controller, battery, or inverter)?

If you want to introduce him to electronics, the best book that I have found is "Getting Started in Electronics" by Forrest M. Mims III. You can pick it up at Radio Shack. After that, I recommend the Engineer's Mini Notebook series (also by Forrest M. Mims III and available at Radio Shack). These are the books that I learned from at that age. I hope this helps.

What you are describing is physically impossible…otherwise we would have perpetual motion machines and no need for fuel of any kind. The windmill loses energy over time through heat noise light etc therefore the fan you are using to power it with also loses enegery to its surroundings over time until everything just stops moving and no more power is being generated. Think of those desktop ball things that go back and forth, eventually those stop, have you never questioned why?

You could but that requires that you have a much larger solar panel or wind turbine. It would also only work while the sunlight or wind is favorable. The major advantage of this kind of system is that it allows you to power a 75 watt appliance with a 5 watt solar panel because it gradually stores energy in the battery over time and is able to deliver it is much shorter bursts to power the appliance. You could however use a grid tie inverter to pump energy directly back into the grid.

can ya bypass the battery and use the power inverter direct from the solar panel or wind turbine…?

You should use a grid tie inverter and solid state switches made with TRIACs to switch the power from line to inverter. SS Switches are quite easy to build, see:
