On that third screw I would recommend using plyers to grab it from the side and twist it loose before using a screwdriver. Those screws are practically designed to strip with very little force.

I don't suppose you have a photo/guide or know where i can get one for replacing the bumpers back into the enclosure? I dropped the casing in a move and the plastoc outside came off so i am now trying to put the rubber bumpers back in place!

Did u get any data recovered from the drive? I have seen a lot of complaints that they wont work without reformat when removed from enclosures because of aes hardware encryption on mybooks that cant be diabled. And only option is to use another wd encosure thats almost identical to failed one, model mfg date etc.

Thanks for video-on further inspection I realize no need to remove 3 screws (actually 4 on my 1TB and your video). I noticed lot of tarnish so I removed the USB3 adapter card and then the hard drive controller. There is a dual pin row of contacts to the internals of the drive. These also looked tarnished on the controller card. I cleaned carefully with silver polish and reinstalled the controller card. Then cleaned any visible tarnish from the USB adapter card. After reassembly, the drive worked again. It did not spin at all when I started (stopped yesterday). Now it seems normal. I think the tarnish under the controller card was the problem. WD Lifeguard diagnostics shows no problem with drive. WD used to have gold plating on connections. Now the gold is missing (saving cost) and the silver tarnishes (sulfide) like ordinary silverware.

Using  chef's knife to open the case instead of screwdriver will keep all 8 pins intact on the plastic cover. The point is not to break anything.

That's simply because hard drive prices are not regulated so they can price whatever however they want.

I meant to say "cheaper than the same (or comparable) drive *without* an enclosure".

Why would external drives ever be cheaper than the same (or comparable) drive in an enclosure? That makes no sense to me. I know earlier ones were not crippled like so. I rescued a 320GB Caviar SE from an older unit that blew its USB hardware. I was planning to do the same to my 1.5TB unit (like in your video) if it ever needed it, but now I know it becomes trash even if only the external support hardware fails. WD: never again. Enclosures or docks + internal drives in the future for me.

Some earlier drives were not coded. They did this because people were buying external drives instead of internal ones during malay flood where we saw immense shortages on drives. Yet these drives were cheaper than internal ones so people bought and ripped.

This kinda makes your entire presentation moot, no? If I can't access the data or the drive itself, because it was encrypted without my knowledge or consent, the drive may as well be a paperweight–or so it would seem. Any idea why WD would do something so nasty to its customers? Encryption by user choice is a good thing. Silent encryption that prevents use of the drive out of its enclosure is an unwarranted obstacle to data access. Damn them. I will never buy another one of their products

In many cases it's the case PSB board. But most My Book are also hard coded to only work with the PCB board and in many cases connecting them to SATA port won't help in recognizing them. But, it doesn't hurt to try.

A watch can cause damage but only by transmitting static electricity in your body to the board. Clothing have a huge effect on how our body charges up. If any of your clothing had even a little bit of nylon, you'll easily fry a board – through your hands or your wrist watch. I work in an area where static can't survive but if I ear nylon shirt I will still fry equipment.

There are any other factors. When you say only your watch, as in, you were not wearing any clothing? Were you in static-safe certified area where other factors could have minimal effect on motherboard?

A metal watch is same electrical potential as the person wearing it. So it can only do as much electrical damage as the technician touching a device.

Great sharing. Guess this My Book quite often has this problem. I have two of them, all failed within a year. Just wonder what is the root cause?
Is it common for all USB 3.0?

Video can't prevent you from breaking those clips though. Don't have to show clips undamaged because video is for reference only and don't a dare or challenge in any way. Your own discretion still applies.

Frankly this is useless in terms of finding out how to take the case apart without doing any damage. I'm not particularly impressed at how you don't show your cover with the broken clips. Surely the whole point is NOT to break anything. Having just done the procedure, following your instructions, and breaking three of the clips, it is obvious the cover only needs to be prised apart about half the thickness of a credit card, and the housing ends need to be raised slightly to slide the cover off.

Hey I have a question. i am having problem accessing my hard drive that came out of my book. It is 2TB hard drive and I took it out of its housing and installed it in my computer.
However ~ the hard drive is being seen by computer as unallocated ~ it is not seeing my hard drive at all ~
I am thinking the device inside the housing is using some other type of interface to read/write to hard drive. at 3:06 you can see that interface there ~
What should I do, I already have disposed the parts ~

Took all day but I actually just now successfully mounted a Samsung drive to the PCB board and USB enclosure.

The trick was to update the firmware using WD's SmartWare software. THEN using the WD's formatter. Now it's good to go!

Is there any way to recycle the green board? I plugged up a Samsung 250 GB drive after I internalized the 2 TB Western Digital drive, and windows will not initialize the drive. I think that green board's encryption is keeping it from recognizing and starting an alien drive.

Hi. I really enjoyed watching your video. It's very informative. I have a WD My Book Essential too. Is it possible for me to use the hard disk inside it as an internal drive for my PC? For your information, I haven't used the software given or do any hard disk encryption on it. I appreciate your reply. Thanks 🙂
