changing the PCB won't work anymore. firmware is different on even a drive with the  same numbers, it will have differences in the firmware. I've tried it. It doesn't work.

In 90% of cases all you have to do is replace the pcb board. If you will remove the laptop hard disk pcb board you will see that all of them have a big square chip on it. That same chip is extremely sensitive to any kind of shock or hot temperatures. The damaged sectors or stuck platter heads and scratched platters can happen only if you hit your hard disk while it was reading/writing. Only in 10% of cases you need to do a platters swap due to mechanical damages, and nearly all of the cases when hdd has mechanical damage is when the guy was angry and hit his laptop.

Blackspots, and end of the live of the drive inside or a scratch on the drive (by falling or moving while writing), u should buy a new one, there is not a good fix for it.

Start to defragmentate your harddrive and make sure your harddrive is not using more then 90% of his live capicity. A hdd need a lot of free space so only the best parts of the drive will be used (there a blackspots on a HDD).

And, if we don't see any burnt component on the circuit board, what can be the problem? thanks.

Usually the damage on the HDD is mechanical. This repair was for an electrical fail. SSD's have more sensitive to electrical fail components so your statement is invalid.

ssd's fail too some are actually worse then harddisks. Its best to keep important files backed up on dvd's or at the very least an external harddisk or 2.

Apparently sometimes a bad PCB will make the hardrive make clicking noises & replacing will fix it. But your're right, this won't work for ones that the PCB isn't at fault.
I'm currently trying to get my hardrive fixed that I bought a while ago…

This works if the controller board on the HD is damage, if the HD is making a clicking sound this trick will not work. Also when swapping a bad controller board for a good board, they must have the same date code, firmware version, same manufacturer and same capacity!

@reply4reply no amount of PCB swapping will work. case and point, i've already tried it and it failed on any new drive. this trick works with older drives where the calibration data is stored on the platters themselves. but with the condensing of data, there is no more room for the calibration data on the platters, so they place it on the PCB.

this does not work guys… the hard drive PCB is PER DRIVE SPECIFIC. doesnt matter if its the same model. all hard drives contain their own specific set of whats called PDL (Primary Defects List). A list of sectors that were inherently defective upon creation. you change that board and the drive is no longer calibrated. it will not work. even of it does, you run the risk of damaging the hard drive even more. you should be soldering a new component such as that burnt one with the spare.

Okay. this video is educative enough as a guide but how are my going to be getting stock of a particular laptop hard drive model.

Moreover,I need a list and guide of software that can be used after a system has been formatted.

    Thanks.
