The techs that detected the problems and charged extra for parts, need to make money too. You go to the food store and buy your groceries, you are paying more than the food is worth. Companies need to make money too, can't work for 0 margins.

If you take your car to the mechanic with a faulty spark plug wire and he replaces it….should that be a freebie? Google is free and your time is free. If you need to take it somewhere and they just plug in a wire you should be charged for it. You don't go call a carpenter to come over and cut wood for you. Yes it is free to him. He has the tools and the knowledge to cut it. Don't want to pay? Go to home depo and buy your own saw.I agree if they couldn't fix your problem you shouldn't have to pay for repairs. If it was a bad system board….you need to pay for the techs time diagnose. If they get the diagnose incorrect? Contact they store they came from. The store needs to know they have tech that shouldn't have a job.I use to feel bad for charging people for little problems. They never seem to feel bad wasting my time with stupid problems. Computer repair is a profession and parts need to be price accordingly. If you don't want to pay. You did a report on what you get.

In all fairness, the guy coming to fix the PC is looking at a PC he thinks just dropped dead.. not one that had a RAM stick put in that's missing contacts.

one way or another you will get rip off..if it's not in price, it'll be on not repairing it right. Worst thing you can do is stare at a technician. He will sure charge you extra because you are putting him under pressure to give you a rushed diagnostic

I would find the ram, but warn the board may have taken a power hit. A blown ram chip would also require a mainboard change in most cases. You can not trust the hardware if you have a visually noticed damaged ram chip the board is more than likely compromised.

My friend took his non-powering PC to a local shop with good reviews and they said it needed a new motherboard. He had me give a second opinion and my first step was to remove all cards to be sure it wasn't one of them, and it turned on fine. Turns out it was just a bad Firewire card, which he didn't even need anymore. I was pretty disappointed that one of the most basic steps (narrow down the problem) wasn't performed and that my friend almost spent a couple hundred on unnecessary parts.
