Philips Zenit Cinema Speakers Review – CSS5530B/37 – 5.1 channel out of the box home theater system

Philips Zenit Cinema Speakers Review – CSS5530B/37 – 5.1 channel out of the box home theater system

Buy it on Amazon – (affiliate link) – If you’re in the market for a sound bar this might be a good alternative.

Compared to a sound bar it will deliver a much better depth of sound, given it’s a true 5.1 channel system that comes with left, right, center, and rear speakers. A subwoofer is also included in the box.

Its real advantage over a more traditional home theater system is its simplicity and compact size. It does not require a huge receiver to operate as everything it needs to operate is contained in the slim center channel speaker that fits nicely underneath a flat screen television.

Installation is very easy – perhaps the easiest I have ever seen with a home theater system. Front speakers attach via their built in wires to the center channel speaker. There are convenient plugs on the front that only go in one way, so it’s impossible to wire it up incorrectly. The rear speaker module connects wirelessly to the center channel speaker and the rear speakers connect to that module with their included wires. This is nice as there’s no need to run wires from one end of the room to another. The subwoofer also has a built in wireless receiver and does not require any wires at all beyond the power cable. An HDMI input takes output from a blu ray player of game console, and an output connects back to a television for the video signal. It took me all of 20 minutes or so to get the entire system configured. Couldn’t be simpler.

But despite its ease of installation audio quality leaves something to be desired. It’s light years beyond whatever speakers are packed into most televisions but it’s not as good as a system powered by a traditional A/V receiver. Audio is loud and clear but I found the overall range of sound to be lacking. It’s very flat even with the subwoofer providing some bass. It also lacks support for the DTS audio format, which means that not all of your Blu Ray movies will sound their best. And a single HDMI port means a lot of shuffling around if more than one device needs to be connected to your audio system.

So who is this device for? Definitely someone in the market for a sound bar. It’ll be better than that and is very easy to get installed and operating. Just don’t expect audiophile quality or support for higher end audio formats.

My front speakers are plugged in but have no noise. They're not blown because I've switched them with the back… any ideas?

For that pice you can get an excellent Onkyo Set with a real receiver and a full speaker set. And this will support DTS HD Master and True HD.. for a tiny bit more even Dolby Atmos although not a lot of those have been released yet but again, better be future proo.

@Lon Seidiman great review, I was interested in this system for the wireless speaker and the simplicity but the lack of DTS and the single HDMi is a let down. What 5.1 system would you recommend as an alternative, with wireless rear speaker, 2+ hdmi ports and dts?

I never understood the point of the sound bar systems. I mean, I guess they're better than the TV speakers for normal TV watching. This doesn't look like it would be bad for like a bedroom setup. At first I thought it was kind of expensive until I remembered the the Denon receiver (that I bought second hand) that I have in my living room was originally more than that lol.

At least this isn't one of those home theater systems with a built-in bd player. Then people ask how to get their TV sound to go through it.

Love seeing speakers! Can you do some nice sounding budget stuff? I've recently started upgrading my sound and becoming more serious about sound. I'm not an audiophile but I've been really interested in grabbing some speakers for the house I will be moving into. Thanks!

I have a quick question. Lon, can you typically upgrade the sub woofer in a sound-bar/sub combo? I would like to, but am guessing you can't. I am unaware of the product number, but it is a Vizio 2.1 soundbar w/wireless powered sub. Pretty decent for the price point, but looking for more depth in my low end.

Thanks for another great video review Sir!
