    Hello,

I have a 25 years old oven and it was working great. The other day I ran the self-cleaning and the self-cleaning cycle was interrupted. After that, I could not unlock the latch to open the door. No error code is available on this oven but something is holding the manual latch and won’t release it. The manual handle is on the outside of the oven door, but I was told not to force the latch open as I could cause more problems.

The oven is a GE JB550GJ and the latch is a manual lock. You slide the latch handle from the left to the right to lock the oven door for self-clean. (I searched the Internet and most solutions for unlocking the latch are for automatic locking mechanism, not for manual latches.)

I powered the oven down for minutes then powered it on. I gently sliding the latch to the left but it won’t release. I tried to run another self-cleaning cycle, but it won’t start the self-cleaning now. Do you know how to release the manual door latch? My specific questions are:

    (1) What is holding the manual latch and not letting go? Is there a way to unlock the latch? What are the specific steps required to reset this specific oven and to allow unlocking a manual latch?

    (2) I have the user manual but it only talks about how to use the oven. I need a service manual to help me understand how the latch got stuck. I searched the Internet but I could not find a service manual for this old model. Do you know where I can download a copy?

    (3) If I pull the oven out and access the back of the oven, is there an easy way to unlock the oven from the back? Do you think my old GE has a locking pawl inside the back panel which I can toggle to unlock the latch?

    (4) I searched the Internet and found no parts relating to the locking mechanism. Do I need new parts to repair this problem after I get the door to open so it won’t happen again?

Thank you for your help. Phil

    Thanks for the video.
I have an older ge electric jbp76gs3ww oven.
I've looked at owners manuals, google searches, and multiple videos – and can't find a consistent picture of the fuse or its location.
There's a circular component that looks like what you have here – but its the back of the oven light, so unless a fuse is built in – hidden – in the bottom of the light socket, that's not it.
The oven light hasnt worked for years though, and there is black residue around it – but like I said its the light, do they ever incorporate the fuse in that light socket part by chance?
The back of the main knob is a control board – with components but nothing that looks like a fuse.
Also under the top, there's stove top components with 3 wires each, there's a two wire door shut switch, a door lock switch – but nothing that resembles "fuse".
Could it be the oven temperature probe/sensor going into the oven (4 inch metal tube)?
Another video guy told me there is a thermal fuse on my model, but I'm not seeing anything resembling " fuse " – unless it's in the circular light socket.
Thanks for your time and any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the oven is not dead, instead just says "too hot" on every key press and is showing "door locked", all you need to do is turn the breakers off, remove the side rails, unscrew the display unit on the side, push it up and tilt it gently forward on the top to get access to the door lock mechanism. Push in the solenoid that is blocking the door lock operation and unlock the door. Put the display unit back in its place but make sure the connectors are still all plugged in tightly. Power the unit on. Voila, oven is functional again.

Great Video! My Frigidare died as soon as we did the self clean. There were about 10 screws and the back came off. There was actually a circuit breaker rather than a fuse. Reset the button and it fired right up. Would have been nicer if the circuit breaker would have been able to access without pulling the panel off. I guess they want to make it a 75 service call to reset the breaker. Thanks!

But how to reach the back of a built-in Whirlpool oven, when the door stays unlocked… can it be removed from the kitchen with the door still locked? Can’t find any screws… I’m screwed?

What is the difference between a thermal fuse and Oven sensor or are they the same thing? I interrupted my clean cycle stupidly, and now I have two error codes on my GE range. I have error F3 which apparently means the Oven temperature sensor is malfunctioning, and I also have Locked door error message which may be cause my Door lock motor is stuck in the wrong cycle. I was thinking of taking out the motor first which is very difficult considering that GE likes to rivet the crap out of the engines over using screws. It will be interesting to see if that will remove the locked door error. Then if the F3 error is still there then i guess i have to change my oven sensor. What a pain! I will never use self clean again. Maybe they should call it self-destruct feature since its so hard on the elements.

This gas range is absolutely amazing!~~>allmy.tips/Whirlpool_Range?34h My two favorite features are the extra large window, and the metal grate on top. I have absolutely no complaints about this range. The light inside the oven is so bright that you can easily see what you are cooking. I also love how the burners work. The inside of the oven is very wide and can fit multiple things at once. You will not be disappointed if you purchase this stove.

KitchenAid double oven self cleaning? Really? is this a business KitchenAid and others have to make you waste your money? I just killed my double oven with the self cleaning? I can't even open the door, blank display and everything. I just ordered the two different parts because it is my understanding my oven has three fuses. Thanks for the video, it is super helpful.

Great video and thank you! This is the first video that came up when I searched “whirlpool oven not working after self clean”. Thought I would share my experience. I did replace the part #4449751, which is the fixed limit thermostat. It didn’t fix it. But I did replace the part # w10545291 thermal fuse and it did fix it. My thoughts to help would be to check that first and foremost. Hope this helps. Thanks again for the video and saving me from buying a new oven.

Link to another video that mentioned thermal fuse replacement.

This was an excellent video. I have the identical make and model and the oven door won't open. I think the control board has failed. Does anyone know how to unlock the latch using a coat hanger to force the latch from the front? Should I move the coat hanger from the left to the right or vice versa.

I have to use the coat hanger i cannot remove the ceran top without first opening up the oven ddor.

Newer appliances are despicable. Keep your ancient ones as long as you possibly can. If its a weird color (harvest gold etc) but it still works good, paint it.
