SENNHEISER HD 201 Headphones Cable Repair

SENNHEISER HD 201 Headphones Cable Repair

Sennheiser HD 201 are one of the top-selling headphones in the world! I am not sure when they first hit the market, but they are almost a decade on the market and still can be purchased in some stores around the globe.

I have purchased this model back in 2010 and they still function as the day one. Except the 3 meters long cable near the headphones entrance point got many bruises, damaged sections and broken wires. But they still work 100%!
The damage of the cable can be seen in one of the still pictures on and the actual severity of it was covered up by a duct tape. Over time I’ve got bored with the present situation and quick & dirty fix and decided to finally give it a proper repair.

This procedure can also be used to shorten or extend and replace the original 3 meters cable, if you need it.

It seems that this “very same” model, at least visually, is released as Sennheiser HD 206 (HD206, HD-206). From the specs it’s impossible to tell the difference between them and the older HD-201 model, as they are virtually the same. We wonder what’s so special about HD-206 model?

I didn't have this exact problem but your video helped me fix the plug for my HD206! Thank you very much! I didn't know about the coating in the wiring and that's why I wasn't able to get it going even though the wiring was correct!

Excellent video! If the wires are not broken yet , but only the isolation close to the headphone is defective, you may simply want to push the broken section to the inside and fix the cable with acrylate glue or silicon.

The "bath" in this case is called tinning. You tin the wire.

Edit: a less specific word to use might be "coat" or "cover"

I performed the repair today, step by step, carefully. The headphones are working but the sound is different now. The bass is kind of gone and the I got more treble on the left. Am I doing something wrong? How can they sound totally crap now? Anyways… I really liked this pair, but it looks like I will have to buy something else. My budget is US$ 50.00

Thanks For video. I Did it to my 4 year old HD 201, but with some changes.
    1) in place of soldering wire I used foil paper, and it works good.
    2) in place of new same wire with male Jack, I used 1 meter aux extension and used female Jack so I can use any new aux cable I want. ( No same wireing problem like cutting off wire over a period of time . ) Like many top end headphones have.
I hope this can help more people in saving cash ,👍👍

Once I saw how easy it was to get into the speaker enclosure the repair was simple, just pulled some more cable through and tied another knot the other side of the bit of damaged cable. Luckily it was only the outer sheath that was damaged on mine. Cheers.

Mine in 3 years had the outer layer of the foam peeled, the 3,5mm plug had a problem and now the cord is peeling, but I don't wanna replace my headphones, I love the sound of this headphone, I will replace the cable, for sure.

Hvala za video, kupio sam svoje 2008. i crna ovojnica je potpuno ispucana al sve je još uredno na mjestu i radi bez smatnji. Tražim ovakav video za HD201 još od prije par godina tako da hvla puno još jednom!

Very good job, but those headphones are total crap – not worthy of such effort if you don't have that proper equipment and skills.

I had the same model, always used indoor. The foam already started to decompose after some months, i was finding pieces of black foam on the bed everyday. Then the cord rubber started to peel in a lot of pieces, leaving the conductor wires exposed. It ended in a dirty mess of adhesive tape, tried to fix it and definitively broken it. Sennheiser, NEVER again. An historical brand now produces this crap – no thanks!!

I wanted to completely replace the cable for a thicker one… but if i have to use that small part of that ridicously thin cable… is it worth it?
