We’ve all had the experience: you’re walking across a soft carpet, you reach for the doorknob and … ZAP. But what causes this trademark jolt of static electricity? Anuradha Bhagwat sheds light on the phenomenon by examining the nature of matter.

They explain really well and the music helps me concentrate
An Engineer told me that Static Current is Good For Health.
Just one problem. The info is wrong! Walking across a carpet does not slough off electrons from yourself; it sloughs off electrons from the carpet. Thus YOU become negatively charged with excess electrons relative to other objects. When you touch the metal doorknob, the excess electrons from your body jump across to the doorknob which creates a shock. Funny that 22K people liked the video which is incorrect. Sorry to be the one to pop your bubble.
Outstanding ..great job
And that's how I kinda understood static elecrricity
my thanks
It has been 7 yrs since this video was posted and still the quality of the content is unmatchable .The most interesting and unique way of teaching physics….. . Had such videos be made for each concept , everyone would have truly loved physics. Such videos should be presented before the children in classrooms so that they can " feel the physics in everyday life " .
Those who agree with me can like
BRUH LOOK AT 2:40
So how do metal gain back it’s electron thats lost
That thing is not in equilibrium
why are the people on ted ed so much better at explaining things like this than my teachers?
hello St. Thomas Aquinas
that ending 💀
Awesome
That's why
I had no words to describe Ted Ed work I hope they keep developing and make there way to every children to teach them a better way to live. Thanks Ted Ed 🙂🙏. Iam a student I don't have mony to donate but I can like and share your videos.
OMG.. thank you for explaining this perplexing concept so lucidly and touching on the complex physical topics involved briefly and simply!
why isnt this a science channel
"we dont know why this happens…" anything but the one true God of Abraham
Psalm 97:4
"His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled."
Well now I know how to get myself struckt by lightning lol 😂😂😂 nice vid btw
Its true. I doubt the Fukushima Japan disaster is powerful enough to cause the static or all electricity to power the soul in the dirt. But a heart attack from a "storm of time travel will indeed be needed for 'the spirit and soul chakra' to come up through along with something". The "other". Bigger event needs to not stop
Just made my PC do a system restart because I shocked it on accident so I’m watching this now I guess
I love ur videos
Cool 😎 video I learned a lot here
How protect my self from static electricity
I need them to brake this down for me on a 3rd grade level…
Static discharge is the quick electricity created when electrons are moving to a positively charged material to restore the neutral charge equilibrium.
Thank you TED-ED!
Very informative !!
I am watching this video for a quiz 😁
If only school could make stuff like this interesting like how you guys are doing at Ted-Ed
Came back for CG's Beast Mode to kick off 2022! 💪🏾
Hindi me btaeya
Hindi and english dono me btaiya
metro boomin make it boom yea (kiss) metro boomin make it boom, make it boohoom
Why if you wear boots 👢 and you u don't touch the ground the electric cables can't give you an electric shock?
I tried but that works
Thank-you 👍👍👍
Music background is distracting…. Otherwise a good presentation
Yesterday I got a PC and while I was taking it out of the box it shocked me (pun not intended)
Mantaf
And that's how Thanos snapped his fingies and make half universe alive
2:43 uhhh, what is that hand
Ok so positive charge don't do any harm
